Located to the northwest of the New Guinea island of Indonesia, the Raja Ampat archipelago is comprised of over 1,500 small, beautiful and isolated islands. It’s also considered part of the Coral Triangle which contains the richest marine biodiversity on Earth. Its beauty, diversity and abundant marine life is what makes a Raja Ampat liveaboard trip the ultimate dream of any diver.

When it comes to what you can see underwater, Raja Ampat surprises even the most well-traveled diver. Diverse is the best adjective to describe this place. It has soft corals, hard corals, caves, WWII wrecks, drop offs, shallow reefs, black and white sand bottoms, currents, calm waters, macro diving and big fish. In other words, if you don’t like diving here, you might not like diving at all!

Diving in Raja is not for budget travelers. However, most of the expenses are related to logistics and transportation, not the diving itself. However, if you are going to pay to come all this way, you better get to dive and explore what the islands have to offer and that’s when a liveaboard is your best option.

Being a prime destination for scuba diving, there are many diving liveaboards operating in Raja Ampat. To help you choose the right boat for preferences and budget, we’ve put together this quick guide that shows you the best boats and some things to consider when it comes time to book.

HOW TO CHOOSE A LIVEABOARD IN RAJA AMPAT

Every diver is different just as every boat is not the same. Depending on your preferences, budget and schedule, some liveaboard trips might suit you better than others. The following are some important aspects to consider when choosing a boat for you and your dive buddies.

WHAT MONTH OF THE YEAR YOU PLAN TO GO?

Liveaboards operate in Raja Ampat between October and April, which is the dry season in Indonesia. However, it’s possible to dive between May and September, as liveaboards tend to go further east to Cenderawasih Bay, where you can dive with whale sharks in sheltered dive sites.

The visibility gets reduced between October and April when the plankton blooms, but that also brings greater numbers of manta rays to the area.

WHAT MARINE LIFE DO YOU WANT TO SEE?

If you’re coming to Raja Ampat to see some specific marine life, you don’t need to worry about what specific month you come.

Most of marine creatures can be spotted throughout the year. However, remember this is pure nature and you’re not diving in an aquarium. When it comes to wild animals, you always need a bit of luck to spot them!

LOOKING FOR SOME EXCLUSIVITY OR REDUCED GROUP SIZES?

Raja Ampat is a remote place so you can expect dive sites to be uncrowded. However, there are some liveaboards that cater to smaller groups. Tiger Blue is one of them.

WHAT’S YOUR BUDGET?

Liveaboards in Raja Ampat range from $2,500 to $5,000 depending on the type of boat, duration of the trip and itinerary. Particularly, there are many possible itineraries and trip lengths, so make sure you check them out when comparing several operators.

Also, don’t forget to check what fees are not included in the price of the trip before you book. There is normally a “Port & Park fee” that is not included (around $200 – $250) and some liveaboards also charge for nitrox, hotel tranfers and fuel surcharges.

Did you see any boat that interests you? In the following section you’ll find the main features of each boat has with a link to check the latest prices and availability.

DIVING ITINERARIES

Raja Ampat is a large geographic area, and there are endless possibilities for liveaboard itineraries in the region. Where your boat goes will depend on the season, trip duration, price point, and goals of the divers onboard.Many liveaboards venture outside of Raja Ampat, and not only during the monsoon. If you’re hoping to pack a little bit of everything into your trip, look for “best of Papua” itineraries. These routes visit historic WWII shipwrecks, Papua’s pristine reefs, and the famous whale sharks of Cenderawasih.

TRADITIONAL

Traditional routes in the park include northern itineraries, focusing on the remote waters north of Sorong and southern courses exploring the area around Misool. Both options are excellent for experienced divers and offer a variety of environments like reef and muck.

NORTHERN

Northern voyages exploring the Dampier Strait are perfect for a wide-angle photo safari, fast-moving currents, and manta cleaning stations. Divers can expect plenty of big fish, and all around challenging dive conditions. Visibility in this region varies greatly.

SOUTHERN

Southern trips around Misool often voyage into the Bana Sea and take on world class macro “bug hunts” around Ambon. The south is known for up-close encounters with wildlife of all sizes, including hammerheads in the Banda Arc. High-speed currents, rare wildlife, and quickly changing dive conditions define this stunning region.

BEST DIVE SITES IN RAJA AMPAT

CENDERWASIH BAY

Though not officially a part of Raja Ampat, this marine park is visited by liveaboards during the monsoon season. The main attraction is a guaranteed chance to dive alongside feeding whale sharks. But, historical WWII wrecks and vibrant coral reefs make the region 100% worth a visit.

THE FAR NORTH

If you’re serious about spotting a pygmy seahorse, these northern walls are a good bet. Multiple species reside here, with some individual fans housing groups of six or more. This area is also reliable for nudibranchs, clingfish, squat lobsters, and crinoid shrimp. Photographers should plan for an extra-tiny macro shootout. Consider a snoot for super macro shots. A photographer’s favorite site, The Passage, is one of this region’s most spectacular.

THE FAR SOUTH

The Banda Sea, and Raja Ampat’s most southern sites are some of the region’s most remote. These waters are an excellent place to spot large pelagics like hammerheads and mantas. But, anything can happen out there including encounters with orcas, dolphins, and whales. Photographers should plan for a wide-angle adventure featuring plenty of schooling fish, and supersized subjects. The most dived site in this region is Boo Rock.

DAMPIER STRAIT

This stretch of cleaning stations promise manta sightings on nearly every dive, often in large numbers. You should expect strong currents at this shallow site, and most operators secure their groups with reef hooks. Photographers should plan for non-stop wide-angle action. Popular dive sites include Manta Ridge, Manta Sandy, and Sardine Reef.

MISOOL

With some of the best visibility in Raja Ampat, this region is a great place to take in the intense biodiversity of Indonesia’s coral reef. It is also a favorite for photographers in the park. Great hammerhead sharks patrol in deep water, while the shallows are home to a stunning variety of coral and reef fish. If the current allows, slow down and search for macro life. Ghost pipefish, pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and flatworms are among the most exciting finds. Misool’s best-known dive sites are Kaleidoscope and Fabiacet.

5 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A DIVING LIVEABOARD TRIP FOR SINGLES

TRIP GOALS

When planning your liveaboard keep a focus on your goals for the trip. What are you hoping to see and do underwater?

Specialty diving itineraries focus on exciting environments like wrecks and caves, or underwater activities like photography. If interacting with specific wildlife is your priority, consider booking an eco-adventure or citizen science voyage. Photographers can find trips featuring everything from week-long macro safaris to open water shootouts with large pelagics.

Remember that some itineraries require a minimum level of experience or number of dives. Be sure to research these requirements in advance, and discuss any concerns directly with the liveaboard operator.

If your only big goal for this trip is to blow bubbles, your best bet is to choose a boat with a fun, family-style ambiance. One of the best parts of liveaboard diving is getting to know the other divers onboard. As a single traveler, you are at an advantage for meeting new dive buddies and friends.

WHERE AND WHEN

Without a doubt, your most important decision when planning a liveaboard dive trip is where to go. Start by choosing a region, and then get more specific. Or, if you have a particular destination in mind, be prepared to change your dates, budget, or trip goals to make it work.

Some regions are more practical than others for solo travelers. For example, many liveaboards in Southeast Asia will offer shared cabins. You are more likely to find a private room with plenty of perks when diving in The Indian Ocean. And, you can expect low supplemental fees in The Red Sea.

If you’ve already settled on where to go, the next step is to pick the ideal travel dates. Try to book your trip during peak or shoulder season to avoid bad weather and travel delays.

If your timeline isn’t flexible, you may need to change locations. For destination inspiration, stop by The Adventure Junkies homepage, and check out our liveaboard dive guides by the month.

NUMBER OF DAYS

The length of your trip will most likely depend on a variety of factors, like time off from work and budget. If you’re hoping for a quick getaway, you’re in luck. Many short itineraries offer packages for solo divers.

To make the most of your vacation, consider time in transit, too. A destination closer to home might be more budget-friendly, and give you an extra day or two in the water. Also, keep in mind that you’ll need to wait 18 hours before flying home.

How many days do you want to spend in a shared cabin? Backpackers and budget travelers may be used to dormitory-style accommodations and shared space. If you aren’t sure about sharing a room, consider a short itinerary or a boat with single cabins.

CABIN TYPE

Single divers will find three options for onboard accommodations. When planning your trip, be sure to book a cabin that fits your needs for privacy, personal space, and social interaction.

Single cabins are an excellent choice for introverts or divers who prefer a bit of time to themselves. However, most budget boats don’t offer this option. If you are looking for total privacy, be sure to confirm whether your cabin will include an en-suite bathroom in advance.

Shared cabins are the best value for solo divers who don’t mind spending some time around their shipmates. You’ll save money, and have plenty of chances to interact with others onboard. 2 to 4 bunks per cabin is standard, but be sure to confirm how many passengers will share each room.

In some regions, sharing a cabin is not the cultural norm, and single cabins are not available. In these cases, divers are asked to pay a singles supplement to reserve their private room.

This fee can range anywhere between 10% and 100% of your trip’s cost. Be sure to research these charges in advance, and make sure you understand exactly how much you’ll pay up front.

BUDGET

How much do you want to spend on your liveaboard? It’s important to set a firm budget ahead of time and stick to it. Don’t forget to include extra spending money, gratuities, and some backup cash. If your budget is flexible, consider a longer itinerary or trip that features shore excursions.

Plenty of luxury boats cater to solo travelers. Plush private cabins, spa services, and fine dining are widely available. Be sure to consider which perks you will use while onboard. And, find out in advance if there are any supplemental costs.

Traveling solo can be more expensive because you aren’t sharing transport and accommodation on your way to and from the port of departure. If your destination is remote, consider finding a buddy before your trip.

Websites like Divebuddy.com and Scuba Earth are useful resources. You can also try joining The Adventure Junkies online community or post an ad on Scuba Board.

Stopping to explore nearby reefs and grab a quick bite of lunch, sailors often take for granted the safety and security an anchor provides. But if you’ve ever had to ride out a storm—or dragged anchor at night—you’ll soon learn the importance in choosing the best sailboat anchor for your vessel.

To determine how strong your anchor needs to be, we must first understand the differences between old guards versus new generations. Choosing an anchor takes many factors into consideration, some of which tailor to personal sailing habits, your vessel’s size and even the body of water you frequently sail.

While encouraging you to challenge your seafaring skills, we at The Adventure Junkies want beginner sailors and liveaboards to find safe anchorage during rough seas. Below, you’ll find a breakdown of common anchor types and when to use them.

8 THINGS TO CONSIDER TO FIND THE BEST SAILBOAT ANCHOR

MONOHULL VS. MULTIHULL VESSEL TYPES

A beginner sailor might question which anchor is better for their vessel’s hull type. But to be clear–when it comes to choosing an anchor for either monohulls or multihulls (like catamarans), the type of anchor you choose depends more on your vessel’s size and weight. Vessel types are rarely–if ever–a deciding factor.

LAKES VS. COASTAL WATERWAYS

Lakes and rivers do not require the same strength you would need for coastal waters and open seas. But take your sailboat on the Great Lakes, ICW (Intracoastal Waterway) or to brave a transatlantic journey, and you’ll need something more adequate. All anchors listed here are for coastal waterways, but may also be efficient for smaller bodies of water.

CHOOSING THE CORRECT ANCHOR WEIGHT FOR VESSEL LENGTH

To choose the correct anchor weight for your vessel, you need to know your vessel’s weight and length. Always verify the anchor manufacturer’s specifications and suggested vessel length, but know the numbers are typically inflated. I suggest to always bump up to the next size and sail with a heavier anchor than your vessel requires.

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

Anchors are forged from a variety of materials; some metals more modern than others. Keep in mind when you purchase that manufacturers may carry anchor styles in a variety of materials.

ALUMINUM

Aluminum anchors are lightweight by comparison, but come at a cost. Less affordable than steel anchors, they are also not as strong. But sailor prefer them because–when set correctly–they have high holding power.

GALVANIZED STEEL

Galvanized steel is a very strong and inexpensive metal. This material is perfect for sailors who don’t much care how shiny their anchor appears on the bow roller. But although galvanized metal is corrosive, it can wear over some time. Be sure to look for hot-dipped galvanized steel or plan for it to be re-galvanized.

STAINLESS STEEL

If you want your anchor to appear more aesthetically pleasing, stainless steel is the material of choice. Stainless steel is also more resistant to rust and corrosion, but keep in mind it scratches easily and can make anchors more costly.

HIGH TENSILE STEEL

With nearly 3 times the holding power strength as regular steel, making most anchors with high-tensile steel relatively stronger–as long as the anchor sets well.

MANGANESE STEEL

A newer material offered for anchors is manganese steel. Manganese combines the strength of mild steels with high-impact durability for setting repeatedly in rocky seabeds.

SEABED CONDITIONS

Beneath the water’s surface, you can encounter a variety of seabeds. This is one of the most important deciding factors in choosing a sailboat anchor. For liveaboards who find themselves sailing in a variety of seabeds, a plow style anchor or scoop is universal, whereas fluke anchors are perfect for flat sands and muddy bottoms.

ROCKS, REEFS AND CORAL

Rocky seabeds can secure anchors quite well, if not a little too well. Sometimes, sailors find themselves needing to dislodge anchors which become stuck. In these cases, it’s wise to use anchors with slotted shanks, making it easier to release trip lines.

MUD, SAND AND GRASS

Muddy bottoms and sandy seabeds require fluke-style anchors with wide surface areas. And because mud can disguise underlying sediments, it also helps if the anchor can penetrate. Fortress anchors are great for these seabed conditions.

Sandy seabeds grab anchors very well, but challenges arise during shifting tides. Hinged-shank fluke anchors allow pivoting and non-hinged scoop anchors rotate under the sand.

Grass tends to be slippery, making it difficult for certain anchor types to grasp. In these seabeds, heavier anchors outperform engineered designs.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Even if you have a nightwatch partner, sudden storms overtake vessels and send them off course. If you want to set anchor without the worry, many new generation anchors have been tested in hurricanes and outperformed old guard anchors in extreme weather.

HOW WELL DOES IT SET?

If an anchor lacks a way to position itself, it may not set as optimally as intended. You want to assure the anchor is engineered to self-right itself into position when it falls on the seabed. Anchors can set by using a combination of factors from roll bars to tip ballasts to chiseled fluke styles.

ROLL BARS

The new generation anchors are designed with roll bars, reacting to flat seabeds by self-righting and rolling itself over. Originally engineered by Rocna, the design has been further adopted by more anchor manufacturers like Manson.

TIP BALLASTS

In place of roll bars, tip ballasts are simply weighted on one end. It will naturally tilt toward the tip ballasts edge, allowing the anchor to set when it’s dragged. Anchors can have both roll bars and tip ballasts.

DOES IT MOVE WITH CURRENT & TIDE CHANGES?

One challenging skill in dropping anchor is, in fact, getting it out again to reset. With some anchors, setting it on the first try is a matter of luck, especially when you’re unsure of your seabed condition. It’s important to be able to quickly reset, or you may find yourself strapping on a wet suit and goggles to retrieve it in frigid waters.

Sailors should always carry two anchor varieties. This way, after reading a sonar signatures to determine your depth and seabed conditions, you can choose which anchor will best hold as well as the scope needed to reach.

HINGED SHANKS

Hinged shank anchors are needed for sailing in waters where there are tidal changes. If the sailboat turns about, a hinged shank can pivot itself without having to be reset. But moving parts pinch so watch those fingers!

FIXED SHANKS

Fixed shank anchors are fine anchors if you aren’t worried about tidal changes and currents. You may also rely on fixed shanks in muddy seabeds if they are also scoop-styles.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SAILING SHOES

TYPE OF SAILING

Equipment and clothing that you require for sailing very much depend on what type of sailing you’ll be doing. Whether it’s dinghy racing or classic cruising, your footwear needs to be right.

DINGHY SAILING

Dinghy sailing is probably the wettest kind of sailing (unless you’re into extreme performance yachts!) and so your dinghy sailing shoes need to cope. Dinghy sailing also involves shifting your body and weight quickly so clumpy shoes just aren’t going to cut it.

To keep your feet warm and easy to move in wet conditions, most dinghy sailors wear wetsuit booties. Made from neoprene, these types of boots come in different thicknesses depending on what temperatures you’ll be sailing in. Some dinghy sailing booties also have reinforced top sections so they don’t wear out when you’re feet are under the straps.

CRUISING

Cruising tends to be a much more laid back affair than dinghy sailing and shoe choice is much larger. From deck shoes to sailing wellies, your footwear choice will depend on your boat, the conditions and whether you need to go on deck or not.

The main consideration for cruising sailors is a non-marking sole. Black rubber marks are a big no-no on any boat! Cruising shoes should be reasonable waterproof in case waves come over, but also grippy, comfortable and easy to clean.

RACING

While many cruising yachts can also race, the act of racing is a more extreme form of sailing. What does that mean? It means that you’ll probably have a lot more water washing along the decks and into the cockpit.

Yachts may also be more heeled over when racing than other types of sailing so it’s easier to slip. If you want to do some racing or will be sailing a racing yacht, grippy soles are a must. Sailing shoes should also be waterproof and with a low-profile so you can move quickly should you need to.

LOCATION AND WEATHER

Will you be sailing on a lake? At sea? In big waves? In flat water? Will it be cold? Hot? Tropical? No one wants cold feet right?

If you’re sailing in a cold water area, you should plan your shoes for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Why? Because when the wind crosses water, it will often cool to the temperature of the water. Even on a hot, sunny day, sailing can get chilly if the water is cool.

In cold weather, numb toes can be a real problem. If you’re planning on cold water sailing then remember to leave room in sailing shoes for warm, thick socks.

On the flip side, if you’ll be sailing in warm seas and hot sun, you’ll need breathable sailing shoes that won’t leave your feet sweaty. Shows made from leather, mesh or GORE-TEX are usually very breathable.

MATERIAL

Sailing shoes come in all sorts of materials, mainly suited to conditions and environment. Dinghy sailing shoes need to allow you to swim in them should you capsize, hence being made out of neoprene. The thicker the neoprene, the warmer they’ll keep your feet.

Other sailing shoes can be made out of rubber or plastic. These materials are waterproof, making them good for cold water sailing. Rubber isn’t breathable though, so for warmer weather, leather or breathable synthetics are a good choice.

SOLE TYPE

Non-marking soles are crucial for any type of boat. A passenger or crew member with a marking sole is liable to be made to walk the plank. Luckily, it’s hard to find marking soles in the sailing shoe industry. All the sailing shoes featured in our reviews have non-marking soles.

Grippy soles are important as decks and cockpits can get very slippery. However, deep tread isn’t necessarily good and can pick up stones and gravel ashore which then scratch the gelcoat and wood on a boat.

Neoprene booties usually have reinforced soles for longevity and extra comfort when walking up dinghy ramps. Cheaper booties might lack this feature and could wear out much faster but are great for beginners.

COMFORT

Uncomfortable shoes are terrible so it seems like a no-brainer to buy comfortable sailing shoes. But there’s often more to it than ordinary shoes.

For instance, will you always be wearing socks? Sometimes, you might need to get out on deck quickly when you have to reef a sail. You may not have time to put socks on, so can you still wear and walk in your shoes without them?

Do you find shoes often rub? If so, finding shoes with a softer opening might be a good idea. Blisters can get infected in saltwater environments, especially if you’re sailing in the sub-tropics and tropics.

5 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A SHORT DIVING LIVEABOARD TRIP

TRIP GOALS

What do you have in mind for this trip? Whether your focus is on reefs, wrecks, specific wildlife sightings, or underwater photography, be sure to plan around a central goal. It’s best to research your destination and vessel ahead of time, and choose a specialty itinerary whenever possible.

Short itineraries also make good options for groups with non-divers and children. Some boats offer a variety of activities other than diving, perfect for mixed groups.

Some regions, like the Similan Islands, are excellent for liveaboard dive courses. Popular options for continuing education are the Advanced Open Water course, Nitrox, and underwater photography.

REGION

Do you have a specific dive destination in mind? More remote locations are best for longer itineraries, but some of the planet’s most exciting diving fits perfectly into a short timeline.

The Red Sea is an excellent choice for divers with 2 to 4 days to spend in the water. Itineraries around Sharm El Sheikh explore the best of Tiran, Ras Mohammad, and the SS Thistlegorm in 3 days.

Some destinations like The Carribean and Southeast Asia experience powerful storms, cyclones, and monsoons. Be sure to book during peak season to ensure an enjoyable trip.

The Indian Ocean and South Pacific make great dive destinations year round, and offer plenty of options for beginner divers. If you only have a day or two set aside for diving, The Great Barrier Reef might be your best bet.

NUMBER OF DIVES

When planning your liveaboard, be sure to confirm how many dives you’ll complete per day. Unless you’re diving in freezing water, 3 to 4 tanks a day is a good goal. You should also confirm whether night diving is available in advance.

Some destinations like The Galapagos Islands advertise short itineraries for snorkeling and trekking only. Similarly, many Caribbean destinations offer whale watching liveaboards that include no diving at all. Be sure to read a detailed trip description before booking, and share your expectations with the operator up front.

If you’re planning a trip that focuses on technical depths or wreck diving, keep time for off-gassing in mind.

SEASON

Many liveaboard destinations have distinct diving, shoulder, and offseasons. If you’re traveling on a budget, shoulder, and end of season discounts can be a great value. And, if your dates of travel aren’t flexible, pick somewhere with excellent conditions year-round, like The Maldives.

If diving with a specific species is a priority, be sure to research whether your favorite find will be in the region. Remember that some big pelagics like whale sharks and manta rays are typically present during months with low visibility due to plankton blooms.

Need a little more inspiration? Check out PADI’s diving calendar for month by month suggestions.

BUDGET

Short itineraries can cost anywhere between $300 and $3,000 depending on where you dive, and whether you choose a luxury boat. Some vessels feel more like boutique spas and hotels than a liveaboard. These liveaboards combine diving with high-end accommodations and plenty of perks onboard.

If you don’t mind passing up a few creature comforts, there are plenty of excellent short itineraries for under $500. Keep extra expenses like travel to and from port, drinks, snacks, and gratuities in mind when budgeting. And, always keep some extra cash on hand, just in case.

5 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A DIVING LIVEABOARD TRIP FOR NON-DIVERS

ONBOARD FEATURES

How much non-diving guests enjoy their liveaboard experience will depend on the boat’s amenities. Remember that they will be spending the majority of their time onboard, unlike the divers in your group.

Special features like hot tubs, saunas, and spa services can help guests pass their time and enjoy some holiday luxury at sea. Spacious and well-appointed common areas are also good for relaxation. If possible, choose a boat with both sunny and shaded decks, for a variety of places to spend the days.

The bottom line is that non-divers confined to small quarters with nothing to do all day will be miserable. Fresh air, sunshine, plenty of snacks, and some creature comforts, will make the liveaboard more worthwhile.

DESTINATION

What activities are available for non-divers will have a lot to do with where your boat is going. Avoid open ocean destinations like the North Pacific, as they offer little opportunity for swimming and snorkeling.

Likewise, anywhere with rough surface conditions will be uncomfortable for guests spending their entire day onboard. Seasickness is a concern, as is boredom.

If possible, select a location with plenty of optional activities in and out of the water. And, keep environmental factors like the weather in mind. Be sure to book during peak or shoulder liveaboard season to avoid rain and wind.

Many liveaboard destinations like Komodo and The Galapagos Islands have plenty to offer guests, whether they dive or not. But, some advanced planning can help make the most of their vacation. Don’t forget to research extra costs like marine park fees, as well as regulations and logistics concerning non-divers.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

What are your non-diving friends planning to do while onboard? There are plenty of activities to choose from, but you need to have some goals up front.

Swimming and snorkeling are standard activities, but quality and enjoyment vary greatly. Be sure to find out whether guests have unlimited access to the water. And, whether they will be able to use RIBs or dive tenders. Also, if your region of choice offers snorkeling with whale sharks or manta rays, be sure that these guests can partake in the experience.

Kayaking, fishing, boating, sailing, freediving, and other watersports are available on select liveaboards. Before booking, check if there are any extra costs for these activities.

Many boats offer courses, and that includes Discover Scuba Diving. Just because members of your group aren’t certified divers doesn’t mean that they can’t dive. If scuba is completely out of the question, a freediving course might be fun.

Shore excursions can be the highlight of some liveaboard trips. Trekking, hiking, wildlife viewing and photography, and more are available depending on your destination.

TIMELINE

How long your liveaboard lasts normally depends on your budget and trip goals. But, when you have non-divers in the group, you might need to shorten your dream itinerary. Even if there is plenty to see and do onboard, anything over a week might be uncomfortable for them.

When planning, be sure to consider your time in transit, as well as dive days. Remote destinations like Fiji might require a little extra effort to reach. This consideration is especially important if children are traveling with your group. They tend to be more sensitive to seasickness and boredom onboard.

Remember to plan an extra day at the end of your trip for off-gassing. You should always wait 18 hours before flying but plan conservatively to avoid any issues.

BUDGET

Most boats offer a discounted rate for non-divers joining your group. And, in some cases, it might even cost the same amount as paying a singles supplement.

If you are a solo diver visiting the Red Sea or the Indian Ocean you should look into the cost of bringing a non-diving friend along to share your cabin. For more information, check out our article on liveaboard diving trips for single divers.

If your extra guests want to partake in any extra activities like snorkeling or land excursions, be sure to verify the cost in advance. Also, plan for gratuities and travel expenses just as you would with more divers in the group.

All liveaboard passengers should carry additional insurance for their trip. Call your provider ahead of time to find out if your policy covers extra guests. Many top companies like DAN offer coverage for mixed groups.
