The region of Nussa Tengara in Indonesia is full of inhabited islands where great amount of fish congregates making the scuba diving one of the favourite activities in the area. One of those islands is the famous Komodo, where you can see the biggest lizard in the world. But what you can also experience is some of the best scuba diving destinations in this part of the world.

From Labuanbajo, on the island of Flores, you can easily dive the Komodo Island National Park. There are a few dive shops offering from day trips to liveaboards. We dived in 5 different places: Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, Bathu Balong North and South and Manta Point.

WHAT WE LIKED THE MOST

  • Great diversity of fish and corals. It´s amazing how much you can see on a single dive.
  • The manta rays. I just can´t get tired of these animals.

WHAT WE DIDN´T LIKE THAT MUCH

  • Some dive sites can be a bit crowded.
  • People throwing rubish to the sea from the dive boats.

It´s about 4 hours round trip for a 2-tank dive.

Dry season is between April and December.

Base yourself in Labuanbajo and go from there in day-trips

If you plan to dive a lot, there are interesting liveaboard options. Don’t forget to bring your own scuba diving gear and your dive wrist computer if you have one.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The diving at Komodo Island will definitely fill your expectations. This place deserves all the good reviews it gets. But there are ways to improve your experience. Some of the closest dive sites as Crystal Rock or Castle Rock, although they are pretty good sites, are totally packed with people. Try to get on the liveaboards that go further where less people go and you will have the time of your life.
